LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Creator Dick Wolf has pegged veteran TV and theater director Matthew Penn as executive producer and showrunner on the long-running mothership "Law & Order." Penn will take over as the show approaches its 14th season next fall on NBC.
Penn signed a multi-year deal and will continue to direct, even as he oversees production on the New York-based "Law & Order" set. He replaces Jeffrey Hayes, who will continue to executive produce along with Wolf, Michael S. Chernuchin and Peter Jankowski.
"Matthew has been one of the core group of 'Law & Order' directors for almost a decade and he has directed many of the series' landmark episodes. I am thrilled that he has agreed to head the New York production team," says Wolf.
Among Penn's credits directing the show are the 200th episode, which featured Julia Roberts and earned him an Emmy nomination. In addition to his work with the Ensemble Studio Theater and the George Street Playhouse, Penn has directed episodes of "NYPD Blue," "The Sopranos" and "Third Watch."
