Je poursuis mes petites présentations de certains films de Sam Waterston . En 1988 ,il tourne pour la télévision "LINCOLN" adapté du best-seller de Gore Vidal. Dans ce film Sam Waterston joue le rôle d'A . Lincoln et Mary Taylor Moore celui de Mary Lincoln . C'est un excellent portrait d'un des plus célèbres des Présidents US ( on l'a vu lors de l'élection d'Obama c'est une référence absolue pour les américains) . C'est un portrait qui montre toute la complexité du personnage, son enthousiasme, son désarrois et parfois son désespoir . Les deux principaux interprètes, Sam Waterston et Mary Taylor Moore y sont fabuleux . Dans ce film, il n'y a pas de grandes batailles au sens hollywoodien ,l'accent est mis sur le caractère des personnages comme par exemple la lente glissée vers la folie de Mary et les tourments d'Abraham ( il y a la très belle scène où l'on voit Lincoln rêvait de sa propre mort).C'est un rôle important pour Sam Waterston en raison de son admiration pour le personnage historique ,il en fit plus tard en 1993 une nouvelle interprétation mais cette fois-ci au théâtre , interprétation qui lui valut une nomination au Tony Award . Malheureusement le dvd du film est en anglais et sans sous-titrage . J'ai trouvé une vidéo rare en français de "Mirror, Mirror" de Scorcese faisant partie des Histoires Fantastiques ,le doublage n'est pas très bon mais,bon, on se contente de ce que l'on a . Sam Waterston’s portrayal of charismatic, tough District Attorney Jack McCoy, in Wolf Films/Universal Media Studio’s Law & Order, which is now in its 2oth season on NBC, has earned three Emmy nominations for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, the 1999 Screen Actors Guild Award, a Screen Actors Guild nomination in 1998 and a Golden Globe nomination in 1995.

Waterston received a Best Actor Oscar nomination for The Killing Fields, three Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe Award for I’ll Fly Away, and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actor and Most Promising Newcomer for the “Nick Carraway” role in The Great Gatsby. He was awarded an Emmy as host of the ten-part NBC informational series Lost Civilizations, and, in England, has received numerous BAFTA nominations.

Waterston’s extensive film credits include Woody Allen’s films Interiors, Hannah and Her Sisters and Crimes and Misdemeanors, John Waters’ Serial Mom, Hopscotch and Heaven’s Gate and two Anthony Harvey films; Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie with Katharine Hepburn, Michael Moriarty, and Joanna Miles and Eagles Wing with Martin Sheen and Harvey Keitel. He starred opposite Jeff Bridges in Tom McGuane’s Rancho Deluxe and with Reese Witherspoon in Man in the Moon. On television, he played “Oppenheimer” in mini-series of the same name, produced and starred opposite Jennifer Beals and Lisa Gay Hamilton in the cable movie A House Divided, and portrayed Abraham Lincoln opposite Mary Tyler Moore in Gore Vidal’s television mini-series, Lincoln. Waterston starred in the NBC movie, The Matthew Shepard Story, opposite Stockard Channing and his recent films include The Commission with Martin Landau and Le Divorce with Kate Hudson, Glenn Close and Stockard Channing.

Waterston earned a Tony Award nomination as Lincoln in Abe Lincoln in Illinois at the Lincoln Center Theater in New York, and an Obie Award and a Drama Desk Award for his “Benedick” in Much Ado About Nothing. His stage work includes the New York Shakespeare Festival, productions As You Like It, Cymbeline, Measure for Measure and Hamlet. In 2000 Waterston played “James Tyrone” in Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey into Night, with his son James as “Edmund” at Syracuse Stage, with John Slattery and Elizabeth Franz. In 2003 Waterston starred in the world premiere production of David Rabe’s The Black Monk at the Yale Repertory Theater. In 2004 Waterston returned to The Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park in a reprise production of Much Ado About Nothing, portraying “Leonato” opposite his daughter, Elisabeth (The Prince and Me) starring in the “Hero” role. Most recently, Waterston appeared as “Polonius” in Michael Stuhlbarg’s Hamlet.

Waterston is a graduate of Yale University and currently serves on the board of Oceana, the world’s preeminent ocean conservation organization.

Je continue la promenade à travers la filmographie de Sam Waterston . Comme dans sa dernière interview publiée ici-même il parle de l'année 1973 année phare pour lui avec en particulier le tournage de "The Great Gatsby" . Parlons de ce film de Jack Clayton sur un scénario de F.F Coppola avec Robert Redford,Mia Farrow,Bruce Dern et bien sûr Sam . C'est un drame inspiré du roman F.Scott Fitzgerald . Ce film dépeint le tableau de "la haute aristocratie" américaine dans les années 20 qui vit dans l'insouciance ,la frivolité ,l'égoïsme . Sous les yeux du narrateur,observateur lucide de cette micro-société,Nick Carraway joué par Sam Waterston,une histoire d'amour tragique va se dérouler entre le mystérieux Gatsby joué par Redford et Daizy jouée par Farrow.
Je pense que beaucoup d'entre vous connaissent ce film , personnellement je l'aime beaucoup,malgré quelques longueurs , Redford en Gatsby est parfait, Waterston est parfait - son interprétation lui valut une nomination au Golden Globe dans 2 catégories meilleur second rôle et meilleur jeune interprète- , c'était son premier grand rôle dans un film hollywoodien , seule Mia Farrow me déçoit un peu avec un arrière goût de "j'en fais trop dans la minauderie" - je ne parle même pas de son doublage qui m'exaspère -. Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas l'oeuvre de Fitzgerald c'est peut-être une bonne occasion de se donner l'envie de lire ensuite ce roman ,pilier de la littérature américaine (auquel le film est d'ailleurs assez fidèle). Sam Waterston a participé le 9 Mars à une cérémonie pour la rénovation du Public Theater avec d'autres comédiens , metteurs en scènes et dramaturges . Sam Waterston a participé sur CBS au Sunday Morning du 18 Avril 2010 , émission d'une dizaine de minutes qui se passait en partie sur un voilier , dont voici la transcription de l'interview :

Holding Court With Sam Waterston

"(CBS) Whatever the role, Sam Waterston projects a rock-solid image that has won him an unshakably loyal following. Anthony Mason explores how he's been able to do that in this Sunday Profile:

Sam Waterston was warned early and often that acting was an "unreliable" profession.

"I mean, the truth is that at any time in this business you could fall off the edge of the world," he said.

But then, on the NBC series "Law & Order," he stumbled on the rarest thing in his business: A steady job:

He's now in his 16th season. "Yeah, wow!" he said.

For 363 episodes, he has played Jack McCoy, the quiet but tenacious district attorney.

This year it got him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

He said that notwithstanding everything else he's done, the role which has earned him 3 Emmy nominations was the reason he was there.

"I backed into appreciating it though, for sure," he told Mason.

"Backed in?"

"You have to understand that I came to show business from my father's point of view, which was that the theater, the classics, were respectable and worthy of interest; that the movies were silly; and that TV was really beneath contempt."

"So how did you find yourself taking a job in television, the industry that was beneath contempt?" asked Mason.

"Well, look at the things I've gotten to do in television," Waterston said.

His first major TV role, in the early 1980s, was in the PBS miniseries "Oppenheimer," playing the physicist who led the development of the nuclear bomb.

In the early nineties, he played a southern district attorney in "I'll Fly Away," the acclaimed series that dealt with civil rights.

When that show was canceled, he joined the cast of "Law & Order":

He said when he got the part, he expected the job would last one season. "And then I thought, 'Oh, I could do two. Well, maybe three . . . "

Sixteen years later. he no longer has to be persuaded about the power of television:

"I can't tell you the number of people who have come up to me on the street and said, 'I'm a lawyer because of you.'"

Waterston, who'll turn 70 later this year, grew up along the New England coast.

His father, George Waterston, not only taught languages, but he also directed the school plays. Sam says the acting bug came from him.

"He gave me a job, my very first acting job," Waterston said. "I was six years old. And it was at the school where he taught, at Brooks."

Young Sam was immediately hooked. After graduating Yale, Waterston moved to New York and landed a series of small stage roles.

His breakthrough came in 1972, playing Benedick in the New York Shakespeare Festival's production of "Much Ado About Nothing." The show was such a big hit it was filmed for broadcast on CBS.

"Katharine Hepburn saw that and decided that it would be worth seeing me about playing her son in 'The Glass Menagerie,'" Waterston said. He was invited for a chat.

Hepburn's assistant showed the young actor into her Manhattan townhouse, Waterston recalled her entrance down stairs, "just like in a movie."

By the time Waterston left, he knew he'd got the part:

"She was very energetic and looked you right in the eye - wanted honest answers at all times. Every conversation was sort of a grilling. But what a great lady."

Waterston was struck by another lady he met that year: Model Lynn Woodruff, who would become his second wife.

It was a pivotal year. He also got a part in his first major motion picture, playing opposite Robert Redford in "The Great Gatsby."

"I was in a panic the first night. I didn't get any sleep at all," Waterston said.

One of the last scenes in the movie was set to be shot first. Anxious, Waterston phoned the director, Jack Clayton:

"He said, you know, 'Don't worry Sam. You'll just be looking out a window!'" Waterston laughed. "'And the nice thing about movies is, if we don't like it, we can come back and do it again. Now go to sleep!'"

"Gatsby" was mauled by the critics, but Waterston escaped with Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actor and Most Promising Newcomer.

Woody Allen cast him in four of his films, including "Interiors," "Hannah and Her Sisters," and "Crimes & Misdemeanors."

But it was "The Killing Fields" that established Waterston as a star.

"It made a huge difference," he said.

His portrayal of Sydney Schanberg, the New York Times journalist who rescues a Cambodian colleague, earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

It also led him to join the board of Refugees International; he's been a member for 25 years:

"And that's important to you?" Mason asked.

"Well, it doesn't matter whether it's important to me. It's important."

He's also active on the board of Oceana, a group devoted to protecting the world's oceans and the fish who swim in them.

"It was partly because I loved this part of the world," he said.

The only cause he's more passionate about are his four kids, who are all in the business.

"They are, they are," he said. "That's why my hair is grey!"

Daughters Elizabeth and Katherine are actresses.

"Did you ever sit them down and have a conversation and say, 'You know, maybe this isn't such a great idea'?" Mason asked.

"Every time. Every time."

Son Graham Waterston, a filmmaker, said, "His initial reaction was like a fearful gasp, and then full support."

Son James, also an actor, said there's another side to their famous father: "There's a huge side of him that's not being used by the industry. I mean, he's a really silly guy!"

Waterston did show that silly side on "Saturday Night Live," a far cry from "Hamlet."

He likes to play people in "morally ambiguous situations," he said. "If I say 'Hamlet,' does that suggest anything? People with crucial moral dilemmas, where it's not at all clear what the right thing to do is. I guess that's why I'm kind of a natural for 'Law & Order.'"

He may be one of TV's most enduring leading men, but Sam Waterston has never really sought the limelight. Success, his father used to say, is like smoking.

Okay, if you don't inhale.

"It isn't work," he said. "Just long hours of fun."

And he's such a fine actor . . . you almost believe him."

THE NIGHTMARE YEARS

Cela faisait un certains temps que je n'étais pas venu parler d'un film de Sam Waterston , alors je reprends le cours du chemin avec ce film TV de 1990 "The Nightmare Years" . Film passé à la télévision française , je m'en souviens .
En 1990 il tourne donc ce remarquable film où il joue le rôle de Bill Shirer ,Marthe Keller jouant son épouse Tess Shirer. C'est l'histoire réelle d'un journaliste américain qui, pendant son séjour en Allemagne en tant que correspondant dès 1934, a eu à traiter de la répression grandissante du régime nazi,l'augmentation de la censure de la presse et enfin la perspective d'une guerre mondiale. Tout ceci avec son épouse photographe Autrichienne, ils finiront par s'échapper d'Allemagne avant que la guestapo n'arrête Bill Shirer . Sam est remarquable dans ce film,le New York Times écrivant " Sam Waterston nous livre une de ses plus grandes performances en tant que William Shirer" . La qualité du film est indéniable avec l'apport de reportage de la propagande allemande de l'époque . C'est à la fois un film sur un homme , une profession le journalisme mais aussi une peinture parfaite de la lente et sûre emprise d'une dictature grâce à la propagande et la censure . Je conseille donc à tous (en particulier aux lycéens pour la partie historique) le dvd qui est en zone 2 mais en ...... anglais à moins que vous lisiez les sous-titres en Danois,Suédois,Norvégiens ou Finlandais . Je trouve navrant qu'il n'y est même pas un sous-titrage français surtout qu'au générique il me semble voir la participation d'une chaîne française -fin d'un petit coup de gueule -
