Thompson plays a grieving mother hell-bent on kidnapping a little girl she thinks is her daughter. “it’s a part you haven’t really seen her in” says exec producer Neal Baer. “This ain’t no comedy”. Also in season 6 : the daily show’s Black blasts the airwaves as a shock jock who dare listeners to steal the undias of a rising starlet – and Dana Delany plays the mom of the winning panty-raide. In February, the show will get cop competition from ABC’s Blind Justice, but Baer’s not too worried : “[star] Ron Edlard is a phenomenal actor. But I’m glad I ‘m not writing a show about a blind cop every week”

After gracing 12 of L&O’s 14 past seasons, jerry Orbach has left the squad room …for midseason’s Law and Order : Trial by Jury. Dennis Farina fills his gum-shoe. “He’s not gonna be the same kind of ba-da-bump, borsght-belt thing like Jerry was” says exec producer Eric Overmyer. “His character is more about [black] humor and very stylish. When the other detectives see him, they’re not gonna know whether is wiseguy or a cop”. Story lines involve prison torture in Iraq and death by plasic surgery. Elisabeth Rohm’s stone-faced Serena departs midseason. “I don’t know if she’s gonna just leave or fall off a mountaintop” says Overmeyer. (Oh please, can we decide?)
