Roache, Witt, Beach Like Their L&Os

Another season, another round of Law & Order lineup changes.

British thesp Linus Roache has been added to the cast of NBC's classic crime procedural, taking over as the new assistant prosecutor for Sam Waterston's character, Jack McCoy, who has been promoted to serve as New York's district attorney.

The moves reunites Roache, 43, with Jeremy Sisto—the two costarred last season on the Peacock's short-lived serial mystery Kidnapped. Sisto was added to the cast last month, replacing Milena Govich's Detective Nina Cassady as Jesse L. Martin's (Detective Ed Green) latest partner on the homicide squad.

"I've known Linus' work for several years," Law & Order mastermind Dick Wolf told the Television Critics Association on Tuesday at its annual summer gathering. "He is an actor who totally gets inside his roles. I think he and Sam are going to raise the bar and add intellect and passion in the back half of the show."

A former child actor, Roache has appeared in several films, including Hart's War, Beyond Borders, The Chronicles of Riddick, Batman Begins (in which he played Bruce Wayne's father) and The Namesake.

He was also one of the principal cast members on Kidnapped, which ran for nine episodes before it was deep-sixed due to lackluster ratings. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in the 2002 TV movie RFK as Robert F. Kennedy. That same year he costarred in the Emmy-winning HBO/BBC coproduction The Gathering Storm.

As for Waterson, his character's advancement comes after Fred Thompson, who played the previous D.A., Arthur Branch, decided to leave the long-running drama for a possible presidential bid.

During his presentation Tuesday, Wolf acknowledged that if the former senator ends up in the race, NBC will be forced to yank reruns in which he appears to comply with the FCC's equal-time rule, which guarantees political candidates equal airtime during prime viewing hours.

"If Fred Thompson formally declares his intention to run for president, NBC will not schedule any further repeats of Law & Order featuring Mr. Thompson beyond those already scheduled, which conclude on Saturday, Sept. 1," he said.

The producer noted that Law & Order will kick off its 18th season in January after the conclusion of the NFL season and air 22 episodes without preemptions or repeats through May.

Wolf also hinted at another big casting move on the mothership's horizon, with Martin's contract ending after 13 episodes.

"Jesse could stay on for the entire season," Wolf said. "It's all up in the air...To try to tell you now what's going to happen in six months, I don't know."

Meanwhile, there are other castings moves underway in L&O land.

Alicia Witt will be teaming up with Chris Noth's Detective Mike Logan on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, which will air its first-run broadcasts on the USA Network before showing on NBC.

Witt, 31, will play Detective Nola Falacci, whom she described as a young married mother of two who loves her job and family equally. She'll be filling in temporarily for Julianne Nicholson, who's on maternity leave.

The actress' TV credits include a starring role on the CBS sitcom, Cybill, and guest stints on Ally McBeal and The Sopranos. She's also popped up on the big screen in Mr. Holland's Opus, Urban Legend, Cecil B. Demented, Vanilla Sky, The Upside of Anger and most recently 88 Minutes.

USA will kick off Criminal Intent's seventh season on Thursdays at 10 p.m. starting Oct. 4.

Last but not least, acclaimed Native American actor Adam Beach, who guest starred on Law & Order: Special Victim Unit last season as Detective Chester Lake, a member of the Mohawk nation, will reprise his character full-time beginning next season.

Beach, 34, has a long list of tube credits to his name including Lonesome Dove: The Series, Touched by an Angel, Walker, Texas Ranger, The Dead Zone, JAG, and the HBO telefilm, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. His movie credits include the 1998 indie hit, Smoke Signals and 1999's Mystery, Alaska, 2002's Windtalkers. Last year, he was heralded for his searing performance in Clint Eastwood's Flag of Our Fathers.
